What does the Collin’s Law and Anti-Hazing education course cover?

  • Hazing presents a serious risk to the health and safety of our university community and will not be tolerated at Ohio State. This e-learning module educates members of the university community on how to define and report hazing, an imperative first step in creating a campus community free from hazing. This curriculum also includes information about Ohio’s Anti-Hazing Act, known as Collin’s Law, which outlines criminal penalties and reporting requirements. In addition, university policies and resources that address hazing, knowledge of how to intervene when hazing is occurring and how to report hazing and address reporting requirements to the university are also covered. 

How will this education benefit me and the university community?

  • The e-learning module was created specifically for students by our team here at Ohio State. Knowing how to identify hazing, how to intervene when hazing is occurring and how to report and reporting requirements for hazing is critical to Ohio State’s efforts to eradicate hazing from our community. 

Where can I find the hazing education course?

  • The course will be assigned and tracked through BuckeyeLearn. You can access the e-learning module by logging in to https://buckeyelearn.osu.edu with your Ohio State University credentials. Once you are logged in, search for Collin’s Law and Anti-Hazing on the BuckeyeLearn homepage. In addition, the e-learning module will be assigned to each student as part of your To Do List through BuckeyeLink and will be available from that page. 

How long will I have to complete the course?

  • You are encouraged to complete the course as soon as possible as it is important for everyone to know how to identify, disrupt and report hazing. Collin’s Law requires students to complete the e-learning before joining an organization recognized by or operating under the sanction of the institution. 

Do I have to do the full e-learning module all at once?

  • While it is encouraged to take the course all at once so you can best understand the content and how best to address hazing, you can complete the e-learning at your own pace. Should you need to start or stop the e-learning, you are welcome to do so. The e-learning, however, may bring you back to the beginning of the module you are on rather than your exact place within it. 

How will the university track completion?

  • The course will be tracked through BuckeyeLearn. Those who have not completed the course will continue to be notified throughout the year. 

What will happen if I don’t complete the course?

  • It is important for everyone to know how to identify, challenge and report hazing. Students could be in violation of state law and university policy if they do not complete the e-learning and cannot join any recognized student organizations or groups if they have not completed the e-learning. In addition, your student organization could be in violation of the law if they allow you to join. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to complete the required education as soon as possible.  

Will my participation be public?

  • Individual completion of students will not be shared broadly. However, the Office of Student Life, the Office of Human Resources and relevant university staff will have the ability to review individual completion data. 

I am concerned about the content this e-learning will cover. Can I be exempt from taking the session?

  • If a student feels they cannot complete the course, please contact stophazing@osu.edu for an alternative method to complete the requirement. 

I have never been impacted by hazing nor do I wish to join any student organizations. Do I need to take the e-learning?

  • As members of the Ohio State community, it is critical to the health and safety of our campus that we are free from hazing. Engaging all members of our community in this dialogue is critical to our goal of eradicating hazing from our community. As all students have a reporting requirement about hazing and you can assist a friend or neighbor if they are being hazed, all students must complete the e-learning. 

My organization / department / club / team already requires me to complete different hazing educiation. Do I have to complete this course too?

  • While you may have taken similar education or even more expansive education through your involvements on campus, the Collin's Law Anti-hazing e-learning module allows for the entire university community to have a common understanding and dialogue around hazing. 

Can I take the e-learning on a mobile device?

  • Though it is recommended that you complete this educationi on a computer with a reliable internet connection, the e-learning has been tested and can be completed on a mobile device or iPad as well. 

The recommended browsers are: 

  • Latest Microsoft Edge for Windows
  • Internet Explorer (IE) 11 and greater
  • Apple Safari 10 and greater
  • Latest Mozilla Firefox
  • Latest Google Chrome

How do I find support resources for hazing?

  • Visit osu.edu/hazing for additional information and resources. 

Is the Collin's Law Anti-hazing e-learning ADA accessible?

  • An ADA accessible version of the e-learning is available through BuckeyeLearn. 

As a student working in a university position or graduate assistant, is there a different version of the course I need to take?

  • To promote a common language and understanding of hazing, students and employees are completing the same version of e-learning at this time.

How can I confirm I have completed the course?

  • If you have already completed the course, you can verify your completed transcript in BuckeyeLearn by changing the “Active” button at the top of the transcript page to “Completed.” You can also verify your completion by contacting stophazing@osu.edu.

Understanding your reporting requirement, to be sure you are complying with the law, is an important part of the course. There are no direct impacts on your employment, merit or performance evaluation in this first year of the e-learning module. The course is required for all employees and is a critical component to our efforts to eradicate hazing from campus culture. Additional repercussions for non-completion will be considered in future years.  

Will I be penalized if I was on approved leave or out of the office and was unable to complete the required Collin's Law Anti-hazing e-learning?

  • Unforeseen circumstances, such as approved leave, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 

Will my participation be public?

I don’t have contact with students in my daily job, do I still need to take the e-learning? 

  • Our campus community is committed to preventing and responding to hazing. In addition, we are dedicated to helping our employees understand their obligations under Collin’s Law: Ohio’s Anti-Hazing Act, which extends beyond the university setting. Collin’s Law requires any administrator, employee, faculty member, teacher, consultant, alumnus or volunteer of any organization, including any primary, secondary or post-secondary school or any other public or private educational institution, who is acting in an official and professional capacity shall immediately report the knowledge of hazing to a law enforcement agency in the county in which the victim of hazing resides or in which the hazing is occurring or has occurred. 

Are employees permitted to take the e-learning course on the clock, or can it be requested that they do it on breaks and lunches?

  • The Collin's Law e-learning course is considered to be work performed by the employee, and departments should allow time for employees to complete the education as part of their work responsibilities. Promoting a safe and healthy campus climate for our students and for all members of the university community is a top priority at Ohio State. In addition to educating employees on how to fulfill their reporting obligations, Ohio State hopes this course helps everyone think deeply about this topic. 

I have never been impacted by hazing. Do I need to take the required e-learning?

  • As members of the Ohio State community, it is critical to the health and safety of our campus that we are free from hazing. Engaging all members of our community in this dialogue is critical to our goal of eradicating hazing from our community. As all employees may have hazing reporting requirements under Collin’s Law and you can assist a student, friend or neighbor if they are being hazed, all employees must complete the e-learning module.

I do not have a dedicated workstation for my job. How do I complete this required education? Will computers be provided/available for employees to complete the education?

  • The Collin's Law Anti-hazing e-learning is considered to be work performed by the employee, and departments should facilitate employee’s ability to complete the education. Contact your manager and human resources professional to arrange accommodations in order for you to complete this important education.
